Sarracenia purpurea, The purple pitcher plant. Red to purple pitchers with darker veins that attracts insects. Native Americans used the roots as a diuretic, a treatment for childbirth-related symptoms and as an anti-diabetic. This pitcher plant was also used to prevent smallpox and recent studies have confirmed that extracts from this plant can inhibit pox viruses from reproducing. Zone 5-9. No need to fertilize, it can grow well on just a few insects it traps. Young plants grown from tissue culture that have not yet developed full color, growing and shipped in a 3" pot.
