Two weeks after Hurricane Michael struck we have power back on, I was afraid it was going to be much longer and many of my neighbors are still without. Downtown Marianna still is mostly without power, many sidewalks are still piled with bricks where storefronts collapsed one shopping center has multiple stores with the roof collapsed. We still are trying to save as many of our plants as possible and are most thankful for all that have offered us greenhouse space to put plants in. We still have many more plants that we are working on saving from the collapsed greenhouses and have to spend much time every day with chain saws cutting away trees to get to so many. I have always loved my trees and was proud to have so many stately longleaf pines on my property and deeply saddened that I lost my two 150+ year old Post Oaks. The only ones left standing are badly damaged and will have to be removed we are going to try to save at least two of the Live Oaks, they are damaged but I think we can trim them up. It was amazing to see one of my growing areas under the trees when I was able after two days to cut a path to them, all the plants sitting upright on the benches as if nothing had happened, none had blown off! This was because the 130+ MPH winds we had was all 6' above the ground. As for all those plants sitting upright they were already getting burnt by the sun. Please note when the news states that this was the worst hurricane to strike the panhandle of Florida since 1851, they started keeping records in 1851.
