Michael and Hurricane History

Hurricane Michael is reported as having the third lowest recorded barometric pressure in history.  The lowest was the 1935 Labor Day storm that struck the upper Keys, listed as a Category 5 storm.  This storm claimed 408 lives and destroyed the railroad to Key West which was never rebuilt.  The storm continued on up the west coast of Florida and also struck the Florida panhandle.  The Second lowest recorded barometric pressure in a storm was Hurricane Camille in 1969 that struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast and claimed 259 lives.  I made a trip to Mexico in late August of 1969 and traveled Hwy. 90 down the coast of MS. and got to see the destruction left by this storm, it was incredible.  They are now saying Hurricane Michael may have been a Cat. 5 storm when it came ashore, at least a very strong Cat. 4 storm.  Sixty five deaths are now reported due to this storm and some people are still unaccounted for.
